Can India and Pakistan become one country again? This would be a secular and democratic country with states having more powers like in a federal setup.

Nope. The time for that was in 1946 when the Cabinet Mission Plan was first proposed. Unfortunately the ego of Nehru, Patel and Jinnah got in the way.

Too much water has flown down the Indus since. The animosity and bloodshed has created a bitter legacy that cannot possibly heal. The population exchange brought in a touch of finality to the whole deal (like the expulsion of Circassians and the Greece-Turkey transfer)

The very existence of Pakistan is anti-thetical to the idea of India whereas India is the sine qua non for the existence of Pakistan. The two can never re-unite except in a forced artificial way that will involve the massacre of millions and a possible nuclear holocaust.

I get that part. It was believed the two would reunite in 10 years. But that never happened. If you look at the Indian history extending from Afghanistan to Sri Lanka and Burma it was cosmopolitan for more than 5000 years, this foot note of partition of  70 years is 0.014% of the Indian history.
If you look at it, the British rule was for close to 300 years, Mughals for 300 years, before that you had the Slave dynasty and the Hindu kings.

Elsewhere, in Europe you had the Crusades, Dark Ages that lasted so long.

The time will surely come when the two unite, may be not in our lifetime considering I am in my early 30s. But this will happen but do not know when.

Well if YES,
Are there examples where 2 different adjacent countries have united to form a bigger nation? If yes, what were the reason for getting united?

And logically, those reasons must supersede the already existing laws, legislation, constitution etc of each country.
If in the first place these factors of each country are not complimentary to each, then there are no reasons which can override these factors.
If the reasons are found, then we'll go back to the year 1947 (DE JA VU) i.e. under-developing!!

The First World War was waged between the English, French and Russian Empires against the empires of Central Europe: The German Reich, The Hapsburg Empire and the Ottoman Empire.

We all know that the Empires of Central Europe were defeated in this war and all lost territory after their defeat in this war and all the empires were toppled and replaced by democracies.

The Second World War was waged between World Empires: English and French,  vs the Nazi German Reich and Fascist Itaty in the first phase: 1939-1941 and later the English and French were joined by the Americans and Russians and the Germans were joined by the Militaristic Japanese.

It was an ideological war and also a death struggle primarily between two totalitarian forms of government: Fascism vs Communism.

Holocaust-I was a horrible crime against humanity in this war..which was perpetrated by the Nazis.

We all know that Fascism was crushed and wiped out permanently in this war.

The Third World War will definitely be a religious war and it will pit
Islam vs the remaining religions of the world:

Christian, Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist countries will be allies in a death struggle against Islam.

Islam will be crushed and expunged from our planet because it will indulge in wholesale war against humanity and participate in unimaginable destruction and it will also participate in Holocaust-II against the Jewish People.

The end result after the wiping out of Islam  in this War to end all wars will be the formation of Greater India by incorporating all the historical territories which were once part of India but were lost to Islam during the last 1000 years namely:

Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

So there you go !
You have not only a clear cut answer to this question but also a prophetic answer which will come true.

Indian religions will gain an upper hand in the imagination of people of the world after this war.
